Children

An increase in chronic childhood disease is part of the reason parents today seek alternative health care for kids. Chiropractic care is an effective and affordable program by licensed providers that addresses children’s health conditions associated with the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Gentle, noninvasive and drug free, chiropractic adjustments treat, resolve and prevent a wide range of health problems. Recent research by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) found spinal manipulative therapy safe and successful in treating children of all ages.

  • Birth trauma
  • Sports mishaps
  • Accidental injury
  • Improved sleep
  • stronger immune systems
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Cholic/Constipation
  • Scoliosis
  • Neck pain
  • Asthma
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Patterns of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Success in these areas has implications for chiropractic care’s preventive capacity. Periodic ongoing adjustments at a young age may help stave off the above ailments before they begin. Proper spinal alignment now may delay or prevent degenerative bone or joint disease, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. In addition to maintaining children’s health, regular visits to the chiropractor also instill the value of proactive health care in kids. They’ll be more likely to monitor and manage their health as they grow up and less likely to be afraid or in denial of any health problems. Encouraging good lifelong health habits is one of chiropractic’s best benefits for kids.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a magical time and this time should be enjoyed. Unfortunately during pregnancy 50-80% of women experience back pain. Along with back pain women experience nausea, belly pain, headaches, and swollen feet.  The average weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds, combined with the increased stress placed on the body by the baby, may result in severe discomfort. During pregnancy, a woman’s center of gravity almost immediately begins to shift forward to the front of her pelvis. As the baby grows in size, the woman’s weight is projected even farther forward, and the curvature of her lower back is increased, placing extra stress on the spinal disks. However our innate intelligence allows us to compensate for this by releasing a hormone called relaxin which helps  loosen the ligaments attached to the pelvic bones. But even these natural changes designed to accommodate the growing baby can result in postural imbalances. This can cause an unbalance in the pelvis,  it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth.

Webster technique is a specific assessment of the pelvis and Chiropractic adjustments to allow for balance for optimal growth and development of the baby. It allows for room so that the baby may be in the desired position for deliver. Through Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work focusing on the pelvis undesired symptoms that come along with pregnancy are decreased. This is a time to enjoy and savor not to be in pain and uncomfortable.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported in the July/August 2002 issue an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex when doctors of chiropractic used the Webster Technique. Further, the results from the study suggest that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique as soon as the 8th month of pregnancy when a woman has a breech presentation.

Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth, and the crisis and worry associated with breech and posterior presentations may be avoided altogether. Optimal baby positioning at the time of birth also eliminates the potential for dystocia (difficult labor) and therefore results in easier and safer deliveries for both the mother and baby.

Frequently asked questions

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Not only is chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy, it is also highly beneficial. There are no known contraindications of chiropractic care in pregnancy. We take special care of our pregnant patients and adjustments are gentle and effective for helping with the many physical complaints experienced during pregnancy.

Will the chiropractic adjustments be uncomfortable with my growing belly?

Absolutely not! At Family First Chiropractic, our tables can be adjusted to raise the pelvic piece higher so your belly can rest comfortably. The angle of the table allows the mother to comfortably face down without putting undo pressure on the baby. Many pregnant mothers say the table is so comfortable they don’t want to get off once they’ve received their adjustment because it is the only time they can lay face down with comfort! We also have  chiropractic pregnancy pillows to ensure your comfort!

Why should I receive chiropractic care during pregnancy?

As explained  at the top of the page, there are MANY physiological changes that occur within your body in order to create the best environment for your developing baby. The following changes that occur can cause misalignments (subluxations) of the spine and joints:

  • Protruding abdomen

  • Weight gain

  • Pelvic changes

  • Postural adaptations and increased lumbar (low back) curve

Maintaining balance of the pelvis is important to allow the most room for the baby to develop. When the pelvis is misaligned, it causes restrictions called intrauterine constraint, which may make it difficult for the baby to get in the optimal position for delivery. Correcting these misalignments in the spine and pelvis reduces the risk for breeched deliveries and invasive birth procedures.

What are some of the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?

There are multiple benefits of receiving chiropractic care throughout your pregnancy. The following are some benefits that have been researched and identified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA):

  • Relieving many of the common discomforts associated with pregnancy, such as back, neck, and joint pain

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy

  • Reducing the time of labor and delivery

  • Reducing the need for medications and medical intervention

Other benefits pregnant women may experience while under chiropractic care include relief of the following: sciatica, headaches, nausea, pubic pain, hip pain, breech presentation, and general discomfort.

When in my pregnancy can I begin to receive chiropractic care?

A pregnant mother can begin chiropractic care at any point in her pregnancy. However, it is recommended to start care early in your pregnancy to avoid or minimize the aches and pains of your pregnancy, as well as keep you and your baby as healthy as possible!
